In the Mahabharata, Draupadi’s disrobing transcends legend to reflect the ongoing struggle against patriarchal oppression. Draupadi, the wife of the Pandavas, symbolizes strength and resilience amidst injustice. During a fateful dice game, Yudhishthira stakes Draupadi, leading to her public humiliation by Dusshasana in Hastinapur's court.
Draupadi’s refusal to succumb, with her garment miraculously extending to protect her dignity, exposes the paradoxical treatment of women in patriarchal societies—both prized as possessions and revered for their spirit.
Through the sculptural textile series, Draupadi, Aneri seeks to peel back societal constructs perpetuating such injustices. Draupadi’s story serves as an allegory for the objectification and oppression of women, exposing male authority's fear of female empowerment.
Aneri’s sculptures amplify Draupadi’s defiance, challenging norms that confine women. Her work, deconstructing the saree and developing knitted and crocheted fabric, mirrors Draupadi’s journey to inner strength. It confronts societal beauty standards and the objectification of women, advocating for their empowerment and autonomy. Through her sculptural installation, Aneri challenges the notion that women can be easily objectified and powerless.
